Sport is big business, so Hult’s new Sports MBA is big news. Even bigger is the partnership with the outstanding Barça Innovation Hub, so before the new program kicks off we sat down with Hub General Manager Albert Mundet to talk tactics.

Hult: What is the Barça Innovation Hub and what is it trying to achieve?

Albert: Established in March 2017, The Barça Innovation Hub is FC Barcelona’s platform for driving innovation and knowledge in sports. Our mission is to foster innovation through collaboration with startups, researchers, and professionals. By creating a collaborative ecosystem, we aim to develop new technologies and solutions that benefit both the club and society. Ultimately, our goal is to make Barcelona a global hub for sports innovation, much like Silicon Valley is for the tech world.

The state of the sports industry & key business challenges

H: What are the top challenges facing sports organizations today?

A: The pace at which technology changes means we must constantly innovate, but you could say that for any business. For sports organizations, the evolution of fan engagement is crucial, as fans now expect interactive and personalized experiences across various platforms. Revenue diversification is necessary due to disruptions in traditional streams, pushing us to explore new models like digital content and e-commerce. Sustainability is increasingly important, balancing environmental impact with financial stability. Lastly, ensuring the health and wellness of athletes, both physically and mentally, is paramount. At Barça Innovation Hub, we are committed to leading the way in addressing these challenges through strategic innovation and collaboration.

H: How are sports organizations adapting to new technologies and changing consumer behavior?

A: We’re seeing a lot of innovation with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and virtual reality. These tools are transforming how we train athletes, prevent injuries, and engage with fans. It’s all about creating more precise and effective training programs and offering immersive experiences that fans can’t get anywhere else.

Data analytics, in particular, has become a game-changer. By analyzing vast amounts of data, we can make smarter decisions about everything from player performance to game strategies and even fan preferences. It’s amazing how predictive analytics can help forecast trends and optimize operations.

H: What’s the biggest challenge for professionals trying to break into or advance in the sports business?

Ask any sports fan and they’ll tell you precisely how they could manage their team better. Ask any team manager and they’ll say it’s harder than it looks.

A: Off the pitch, you find a similar challenge, many talented individuals vying for a limited number of positions, which means you need to stand out with unique skills and experience.

Staying up-to-date with the latest technologies and trends is crucial, as the industry evolves rapidly. This demands ongoing education and professional development. Networking is essential for building relationships and opening doors to new opportunities, though it can be challenging for newcomers.

Balancing passion with practicality is key, focusing on developing business acumen and strategic thinking skills.
