Teams of Bachelor of Business Administration students went head-to-head at our London campus to compete in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style competition for investment as part of our undergraduate Enterprise Week. Students had just a few days to come up with their business idea, conduct market research, define pricing and promotion strategies, and propose how to get the product to market. They then pitched their idea to a panel of judges including David Woods, Editorial Director at LID Publishing, Lazo Freeman, a successful Fitness Entrepreneur turned Lifestyle Entrepreneur, and Dr Melissa Willby, Dean of our undergraduate London campus.
This was a great opportunity for students to develop a business idea, practice pitching, and to get valuable feedback on their proposals. But it wasn’t just the students who gained from the experience. Lazo Freeman said: “Young dragons finding their business success and practicing the art of pitching at Hult was a pleasure to watch and even inspired me to look at my business with those fresh eyes.”
The winning team was Expo-Prawn, a duo of Ecuadorian students Juan Martin and Juan Pinto, who’s thorough and well thought out presentation saw them win tickets to London’s O2 arena. They had this to say about the experience: “The Dragons Den challenge was the perfect opportunity for Hult students to get their ideas out there. It was amazing to see the entrepreneurial spirit of the people that took part in this competition. We feel very grateful and optimistic about the future of our start-up. The feedback we got from the professors helped us a lot in making our proposal stronger and more attractive to prospective investors”.
It was a close-run competition though with the range and quality of proposals keeping the judges in long deliberation. Dr Melissa Willby said “There were some incredibly inspiring ideas; this really showcased the DNA of Hult students, internationally mobile and super entrepreneurial!”
The focus and determination of the teams was evident and impressed David Woods who said:
“In a world where the media focuses so much on the potential for disruption generation Y could bring to the corporate world, Hult International Business School has renewed my faith in the potential of millennials. If all university graduates have the same savvy, creativity, confidence and sheer grit as the young entrepreneurs from Hult’s Dragons’ Den, then I think our economies are set to be shaken up for the better.”
