The Googe Developers Club in Boston is progressing the next generation of tech wizards with business acumen. Below we hear from the club’s President, Fayzal Olushi on what exactly is drawing hundreds of Hultians to a club partnered with the Silicon Valley giant, Google.

A worldwide community

Unlike a lot of clubs on Hult’s campuses, the Google Developer’s Club doesn’t begin and end here. I’m Fayzal, the head of the club. We are actually just one chapter of a club that spans universities and business schools worldwide. We make up a section of the Boston Charter and interact with other branches all along the East Coast. Because of our reach, we are one of the largest clubs on all Hult’s campuses with 100 registered members and an additional 160 members engaged in the group chat we’ve got going.

Getting in

You don’t just turn up to a meeting one day and add your name to a register. Because our club directly works with Google, there is a pretty rigorous application process. You must have a background in tech and show your enthusiasm for learning. You then submit an application. Then follows a further interview and screening process. This ensures the right people get in.

Our mission

The club aims to empower its members by providing opportunities for certification in cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cloud computing. There’s also a networking aspect because of the global nature of our club. Specifically in Boston, you can connect with like minds all over the city with a passion for tech.

Where Google comes in

Obviously, there are plenty of us who would love to work for Google. The name itself bolsters our credibility. I must admit that was partly the reason I got involved myself. Their presence allows our members access to resources, events, and mentorship from established professionals in the tech industry. Our aspirations are many but success in the tech industry is usually number one. Google can help with that.

Our events

We organize events all over Boston and industry professionals are always invited. For example, 30 of us recently attended the DevFest conference. We featured speakers from Pfizer and the Broad Institute. In a few weeks, we are planning one of the largest AI conferences the club has seen. Ordinarily, all of these are attended by actual Google developers as well as club members.

The human touch

Something that goes unsaid but shouldn’t is the friends we have made along the way. This community has had a profound effect on my life, and I can genuinely say that I have made friends for life. These friends are students at Hult, students from other business schools, professors, and even professionals in the tech industry.

The future

The camaraderie is a clear achievement of the Google Developers Club but there have been multiple other success stories from our Boston campus. Many of my good friends have gone on to achieve internships and job opportunities. This is without mentioning the technical skills all members continue to develop on a day-to-day basis. And as a little teaser, we may or may not have a podcast in the works! Keep your eyes on us, we’re just getting started.
