Action Learning

—The cornerstone of Hult's MBA education

With Hult's one-year MBA course you will use Action Learning - the combination of theoretical classroom training with real-life business simulations and the ideal hands-on approach to MBA education.

An MBA course that merges theory with practice

We believe that an MBA education should not take place entirely in the classroom. Our Action Learning approach ensures that you have the opportunity to test the theories that you learn from your professors in real business situations. During your fourth module of Hult's MBA course, you will join a small team coached by a faculty member or outside professional, and conduct a project with a real company. You will use your research, analysis, and management skills to tackle your client’s business needs, giving you an invaluable opportunity to network with industry executives and to work closely with your MBA course classmates.

Theoretical concepts will come to life during your Action Learning Project and business simulation exercises. While most MBA courses strive to incorporate a similar "learning by doing" philosophy into their curriculum, many are disadvantaged by their large class sizes. Our relatively small class size enables us to include meaningful activities that put your knowledge to work.

Innovation Olympics at Hult, powered by the IXL Center

The Center for Innovation, Excellence and Leadership (IXL Center) designs, manages and executes the Innovation Olympics Program, Hult's world-class action learning capstone project. The program is unique among traditional MBA classes and other “action learning” programs or business plan competitions because of its practical outcomes: 1) doing real work that makes a real impact on clients and 2) building student confidence and skills to be productive on the very first day after graduation.

The Innovation Olympics is offered simultaneously in Boston, Dubai, London and San Francisco and is a required course for MBA graduation. At each of these locations, Hult partners with five leading organizations and provides each of them with five diverse teams made up of five MBA candidates per team. Each set of five teams competes to develop the best solutions to a company’s growth challenges.

Hult's MBA education: The case study method

Many class sessions are taught using the Harvard Business School case method of instruction. This works perfectly in an accelerated one-year timeframe, and encourages students to improve their communication and problem-solving skills by carefully analyzing real management situations. This approach follows a distinct progression: first, individual preparation and analysis; next, small group discussion and review; and finally, a full class debate. The functional, industrial, and geographic diversity within these discussions provides an opportunity for you to learn from your classmates as well as from your professors. It is also a valuable way for you to practice articulating and defending your ideas. There are no right or wrong answers in this MBA course case study method, though there is frequently follow-up information to illustrate how the problem was solved in reality.

An MBA course that puts learning into practice

Your classroom learning will be reinforced through exercises including:

  1. Team Building Excursion
You and your classmates will spend a day working on a series of leadership and team building exercises in small groups.
  2. Multinational Management Simulation
Through a computer-generated simulation, small teams will act as managers operating in the international marketplace, and compete with other teams.

An MBA Course that emphasizes Practical Skills Development

Hult's MBA education has responded to business leaders’ requests for more practical skill development by integrating five skills courses into the curriculum. These five MBA courses are introduced through a series of workshops, exercises, simulations, and lectures offered in the first two modules of the program. Specific competencies that the Hult MBA courses will develop will be in the areas of:

  • Global Citizenship
  • Business Execution
  • Management Communications
  • Lifelong Career Management
  • IT for Business Managers

An MBA education that emphasizes innovation and growth

Recognizing that innovation is key to sustaining competitive advantage and driving growth, the Action Learning projects in Hult's MBA course are based around this. This integral part of your MBA education will entail formulating a business plan, identifying innovation and growth opportunities, and working in a small team during your fourth module to help a real business. Together, under the guidance of a faculty advisor, you will help a business develop bold and bankable ideas for future growth. Your team will aim to: develop insights about the particular industry and business; identify breakthrough ideas; develop a business concept; and build an implementation plan to present to senior executives and CEOs.

Previous Action Learning projects have included:

  • Developing business plans for new product segments, such as hand-held lighting and remote control devices, for the world's oldest lighting manufacturer, Osram Sylvania.
  • Helping directors at BAE Systems, the global defense and aerospace company, to move into new fields-of-play by leveraging their existing state-of-the-art competencies and technologies in sensors, communications and systems engineering.
  • Identifying new applications and customers for the Director of IBM's Human Ability and Accessibility Center, to help drive demand of IBM's machine-to-human and human-to-machine platform technologies.
  • Identify new growth opportunities for HIS CERA, the leading advisor to international energy companies, financial institutes and governments. From creating a new consulting practice around oil rights under the Arctic ice cap, to creating a credit score for companies trading on Alibaba.
  • Generating credible new growth options for the CEO of Imaginatik, a recently IPOed enterprise software company, that could be implemented in a six to 12 month window.
